We are delighted to announce that Nicole Ferdinand, PhD student in the Department of Culture, Media and Creative Industries has been awarded a research grant from the King’s Cultural Institute for a research project entitled ‘Carnival Futures: Notting Hill Carnival 2020’. This project follows on from a symposium held last year which explored the contributions of the entrepreneurial pioneers responsible for establishing and developing the Notting Hill Carnival.
This new initiative which seeks to move beyond this legacy will engage cultural organizations along with other stakeholders in proactively planning for the future of the Notting Hill Carnival. Nicole will be working closely with Carnival Village and other organizations within the carnival community to engage stakeholders in the process of scenario planning. Nicole will be joined on this project by scenario planning experts within the European Tourism Futures Institute, who have pioneered this approach with tourism organizations throughout the Netherlands.
Nicole would like to hear from members of the Caribbean Diaspora or any students or staff members at King’s who have visited or continue to visit the Notting Hill Carnival with an interest in participating in this project.

The King’s Cultural Institute team provides College leadership in identifying the key challenges and opportunities for the creative and cultural sector and directs, shapes and supports academic and industry collaboration in response to these. Creative Futures project funding is available to academics and external partners wishing to work with KCI in developing cultural policy, practice and/or creative content through the connection of King’s research and expertise with cultural sector activity.
