More recession, more culture

Professor Andy Pratt has just finished acting as guest editor of a special issue of the international journal Cities. The special issue is about creative cities, and how they have fared in the recent recession. The special issue comprises a series of papers that survey cities internationally. This is the first such international survey of creative cities to take place.

The exercise is a truly international endeavour, Andy was joined by Michael Indergaard from New York, and Tom Hutton from Vancouver in the editorial role. The editorial they wrote is entitled ‘Creative cities after the fall of finance’.

Andy and Tom co-wrote a paper for the special issue, ‘Reconceptualising the relationship between the creative economy and the recession: learning from the financial crisis’.

All of the papers in this special issue had their origin in a conference panel that Andy, Mike and Tom organized at the International Sociological Association’s annual conference two years ago. The ISA conference panel was itself based upon a paper that Andy wrote in 2009 (‘The creative and cultural economy and the recession’, Geoforum 40:495-496.)

The special issue is in press, but the papers are all available in ‘pre-press’ online on the Cities journal website where they are awaiting allocation to an issue. Meanwhile they can be read and downloaded, and the unique DOI is valid now and when they are ‘officially’ published.

Downloads are available by clicking on the relevant DOI below, the Cities website (http://www.journals.elsevier.com/cities/) or the draft versions at http://www.andycpratt.info/andy_c_pratt/Research_Writing__Downloads.html
