Creative Works London

Professors Ros Gill and Andy Pratt recently attended the formal launch of Creative Works London (CWL), the AHRC funded creative economy hub. In a major initiative AHRC is funding four hubs in the UK to the tune of £20m over a four year period; the objective is to explore and enhance knowledge exchange in the creative sector. (See:

The launch took place on September 24th on the top floor of City Hall, a spectacular location that affords a 360 degree view of London. The event was hosted by Munira Mizra, the Deputy Mayor of London responsible for culture. (Further information:

CWL has three strands of activity: audiences, technology and production. Management of the overall project is based at Queen Mary London, and at The Cultural Capital Exchange (based in Somerset House). Andy Pratt is running the production strand, which is called Place, Work, Knowledge; he is joined by Ros Gill, and Wendy Malem (London College of Fashion), and Mark Banks (Open University/City University) as the research team, Tarek Virani is the post-doctoral researcher on the project (based at Queen Mary London). The project will be focused on the creative industries ecosystem based in North London, described by an arc from Kings Cross to Stratford, taking in Dalston, Hoxton/Brick Lane, and Hackney Wick. The team will begin by looking at the fashion, music and fine arts sectors. The objective is to explore the interstices – the linkages between places, people and activities – and how they might be enhanced. The CWL web pages contain a wealth of information about the project and the numerous project partners, and as the project develops it will contain full details of all the activities associated with it.
