Bloch Party

CMCI’s Dr Richard Howells was a guest speaker at “The Politics of Utopia: Marxism, Myth and Religion”, a workshop organised by the Centre for Ernst Bloch Studies and the Bakhtin Centre at the University of Sheffield. He gave a paper “Creation and Creativity: Utopia and Navajo Design”, which is part of Howells’ wider research on Ernst Bloch and Utopian critical theory. He placed Navajo design within the context both of Navajo theology and Bloch’s thinking on art, culture and “atheistic Christianity”. The workshop was funded by the British Academy.
