Duke Ellington’s America live at the Barbican and the Hospital Club

CMCI Lecturer Harvey G. Cohen‘s new book Duke Ellington’s America (University of Chicago Press) will be the focus of a live event at the Barbican on 17 June 2010 at 6pm, as part of Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra’s residency at the venue. The event is co-sponsored by the London Centre for Arts and Cultural Exchange (LCACE). Cohen and Alyn Shipton, an award winning author and broadcaster, will discuss the book’s central themes, as well as some of the music being performed by Marsalis and the Orchestra at a concert immediately following. Copies of Duke Ellington’s America will be for sale at the event. Tickets are free, and should be reserved in advance via the phone number in the web address below, although walk-ins will be welcome. Here’s the official webpage for the event:

Also, on Monday 5 July 2010 at 6:30pm, Duke Ellington’s America will have its official book launch at the Hospital Club, 24 Endell St, London WC2H 9HQ. The Hospital Club is a London private club many of whose members work in the cultural and creative industries, and it is hosting this event in its Games Room. Guest list is limited to 40 non-members: if you’re interested in attending, please RSVP at harvey.cohen@kcl.ac.uk. There will be alcohol involved, a short presentation by Harvey G. Cohen, and probably some copies of Duke Ellington’s America for sale as well.

In other related news, this week the University of Chicago Press announced that Duke Ellington’s America is going into a second printing.
